    212 Principle #5 - PERSEVERANCE!

Hey gang!  Well, this is a little later than normal b/c Ray let me SLEEP IN this morning ... it felt GREAT!  He's such a SWEETIE!!  We have MORE SNOW falling, but the kids all went off to school, so not too many "rugrats" at home today!  Smile

Today's 212 Principle is PERSEVERANCE & it's one I've been WAITING to blog about all week!  The video states that:  "Perseverance is not a long race: it is many short races, one after another."  ~ Walter Elliot.  I just think this is the PERFECT way to think about our journey to better health!  I know I've equated this challenge to running a MARATHON & NOT a sprint, but let's face it ... a marathon is pretty darn DAUNTING at this juncture in my life, whether it be real or figurative!! Tongue out

Thinking about this journey, though, as a series of "short races" is EXACTLY how we continue to move forward!  We can do ANYTHING for a small period of time (when we have that 212 belief & attitude!), so if we just "string together" a lot of those little efforts, they will all come together to create a successful journey!

I happen to be a very DETERMINED person (when I finally set my mind to something!), so I really understand this principle.  A few years ago, I stumbled into selling Discovery Toys (being an educator & mom of 4 at the time, I LOVED the products & wanted them ALL!!!).  Anyway, it started out as just a "hobby" until I found out that I could earn a trip to HAWAII for my husband & I.  Well, knowing we would NEVER have an opportunity like that again, I JUMPED at the chance!  I had NEVER done any type of "direct selling" before & I had  LOTS to learn, but I was DETERMINED to make it happen for us!  I had 4 children aged 5 & under & a husband who was out of the house MOST of the fall "toy season" coaching football, but I was going to make it NO MATTER WHAT!  I worked w/my director in Jan. of that year (you had a year to earn the trip) to set up a "plan" to make it happen & then I worked that plan EVERY MONTH!  Some months, I fell WAAAY short (I had just joined the business in late Dec., so not a lot of time to really get my feet "wet"!); however, I TOTALLY BELIEVED I was going to make it happen & I just adjusted my plan & made changes whenever necessary.  The interesting thing is that during this time, my family & friends closest to me really weren't very supportive (except for Ray!) ... they said I was "working too hard," "Never going to make it," "should just quit & go back to being a mom," etc. (as if I wasn't home w/them all day every day!  I did my "business" at night when Ray was home, so they were NEVER w/o a parent at home!).  I had to block out ALL distractions & negativity & I did that by reading POSITIVE books, surrounding myself w/positive people & plastering my goals & incentives all OVER my house!!  I had picutres of Hawaii, coconut candles, lotion & bath soap, I had a Hawaii "picture frame" sitting on my desk, waiting for a picture of Ray & I to be plastered in it ... whatever I could do to INSURE that I would be there!  Well, Dec. came & I of course, got pneumonia that year.  I had about $3000 left to sell & I was NOT deterrred (other consultants who had come that far just gave up ... I couldn't IMAGINE getting that far & quitting!).  I had NO IDEA how I would do it, I just KNEW I would!  I ended up doing a "Toys For Tots drive" that enabled me to sell over $1800 in toys AND donate them to a local drive in our area!  The rest of the toys I sold during the normal "before Christmas rush" & we earned our HAWAII trip! Island with a palm tree It was truly one of the most EXHILARATING experiences in my life!  I had just started in the company & earned a HUGE trip the FIRST year.  It was NEVER easy, but I had a goal, a plan & I worked it EVERY DAY!!  PERSEVERANCE truly paid off!  Ray & I experienced a week in Hawaii TOTALLY PAID FOR, something we would have NEVER had the chance to do otherwise.  It was absolutely wonderful!  The next year, the trip was to Vienna, Austria!  Although I was only a little "short" of earning that trip, our 5th baby was born during what would have been that trip, so it was for the best!  The following year, I earned Ray & I a trip to Cabo San Lucas, another AMAZING vacation for the two of us! Hot Again, it was NEVER easy, but I had the 212 BELIEF, ATTITUDE, FOCUS & PERSEVERANCE that it WOULD happen & it did!!

WHY am I sharing this story???  Becasue I totally see this weight-loss journey as one of THOSE challenges!  I have made the DECISION to change my lifestyle & I am DETERMINED to make it happen.  I have created a PLAN to follow & I am doing whatever I need to do to make it happen!  Some days, I have some SERIOUS adjustments to make, but in the end, I am GOING TO SUCCEED!!  Perseverance pays off BIG TIME, if you just set your sites on winning each of those "little races"!!  NO ONE thought I'd earn those trips w/all the kids we had (& WERE having at the time!) & all the work that had to be done.  A lot of people think I'm "crazy" for trying to lose 60 lbs.  "You don't need to" (they say) or "come out to dinner w/me, you can start tomorrow" or "honey, why kill yourself working so hard ... you look just fine" (little does my mom know that I am actually "killing myself" by NOT doing this!!!).  There are ALWAYS those around us who DOUBT our abilities to succeed & it is our job to NEGATE those voices by persevering through the TOUGH times!!

Today, I challenge you to take a "LEAP" of faith & know that you WILL finish this marathon SUCCESSFULLY because you will PERSEVERE to the END!!  You will do this by WRITING DOWN your smaller "GOALS" & posting them wherever you will see them EVERY day!  Make yourself a "coloring chart" to color in each pound you lose (sorry, goes back to my kindergarten teaching "roots!" I LOVE to color & I LIKE feeling the satisfaction of coloring in those bars EACH WEEK!).  Paste some motivating quotes around your house.  Plan a small reward for each small goal "achieved" (I have a whole "system" of rewards for every 5 lbs. ... 10 lb. losses are celebrated w/each child as a "GOOD-BYE" to the pounds I gained while pregnant w/him or her.  My first 10 lb. celebration was w/my oldest son & we went bowling & enjoyed a wonderful day together, just the two of us!  I'm only 2 lbs. away from my 20 lb. celebration w/my next son, who wants to go to the batting cages.  At the "in-between" 5 lb. marks, I have little "personal or couple rewards" like spending an afternoon reading, or going to a movie w/Ray, or donating 2 "oversized" outfits & buying a NEW one that fits!).  All of this REALLY HELPS me stay on track & makes it FUN!  The kids have a BLAST watching me color in blocks & seeing when their "10 lb. date" is coming (not to mention ... adds a little pressure on me to "keep going" so someone doesn't get "short-changed" of their special date!)!  Wink

Whatever you choose to do to insure you win your little "races" I URGE you to keep your eye on the "PRIZE" at the end!  That is the ONLY WAY you can persevere through the TOUGH STUFF & come out a STRONGER, HEALTHIER person who will live a longer & stronger life for yourself AND your family!!

Remember, as the famous quote says, "It's not how many times you fall that matters, it's how many time you get back up!”

Take care, everyone & until next time .... drink some water, move a little & SMILE! Wink

    212 Principle #4 - FOCUS

Hey everyone!  Well, we're FINALLY back to school (well, all that are of that age!) & my goal is to get this house back into shape!  We had 10 kids here all day yesterday & several trips in & out to play in the snow (oh how I LOVE that whole "dress/undress" process ... NOT!).  Anyway, we survived & it really was fun having everyone home!  Ray has conferences tonight & then a football "coaching thing" at the H.S. tonight (they have all of next year's team come together to play basketball w/coaches & just "hang out & have fun" ... they stay until after midnight!).  Luckily, Ray has tomorrow off, since he's got conferences late tonight, so he's giving me the "day off" tomorrow & staying home w/our kids & our "daycare" kids.  I'm planning to do some shopping for our daughter's b-day on Sun. & then maybe just crash at my mom's for the afternoon & read/nap, since our weekend is going to be really busy!  I am SOOOO blessed that Ray is such a "hands on" dad & so thoughtful to recognize when I need a "break"!  He's the BEST!

So, our 212 principle today is FOCUS & what a GREAT thing to think about!  The video defines 212 Focus as "having a simple, clearly defined goal can capture the imagination & inspire passion.  It can cut through the fog, like a beacon in the night."  What is YOUR focus in this journey?  Have you made it simple & compelling, or have you created a complex, nearly impossible goal to attain?

As we move into the reality of this lifestyle change, it is CRUCIAL that we keep the FOCUS of our journey in sight!  We must be willing to strip away ALL distractions & challenges, so we can truly FOCUS on what we are working toward!  In our BUSY lives, it is SO EASY to get "sidetracked" into doing a MILLION other things each day (trust me, my life is MADE UP of nothing but distractions! Smile), but it is when we put in that EXTRA DEGREE of EFFORT that we pull ourselves BACK into "FOCUS" & do what we said we'd do ... NO MATTER WHAT (which is why I'm finding myself working out at the END of a VERY LONG day more times than I'd like ... never in a MILLION YEARS would I have thought I'd be WILLINGLY heading to my basement to exercise for an HOUR or more at 8pm or later!!) Some days, that extra effort might SEEM impossible, but I URGE YOU to not throw in the towel COMPLETELY.  Simply admit that you can't do an ENTIRE workout, but you CAN spend 10 min. running up & down your stairs (or doing crunches, or walking your dog, or SOME TYPE of physical activity!).  If you're pulled away from the meals you had all PLANNED OUT, then make the BEST of the situation & stay FOCUSED on making the BEST choices you can & move on!  I'm not saying it's easy & some days, you just won't be able to pull it off; however, it's the BIG PICTURE FOCUS that will keep you ON TRACK & moving toward your goal that you must ALWAYS keep in mind!!

To me, 212 FOCUS doesn't mean you barrel toward your goal to the EXCLUSION of all else, it means that you find a way to navigate the daily challenges in a way that keeps you ON TRACK toward your goals!  It isn't always easy, but the 212 ATTITUDE, KINDNESS & BELIEF that you have cultivated will be the tools you can draw on to really keep you FOCUSED on that EXCITING goal you have set for yourself!

Today, I challenge you to re-commit to moving with PASSION & PURPOSE toward what you deserve & we will all be CELEBRATING your arrival in no time at all!!! Open-mouthed

Take care, everyone & until next time .... drink some water, move a little & SMILE! Wink

    212 Priniciple #3 - BELIEF

Hey everyone!  It's another SNOWY one in Ohio, so we are blessed with yet another snow day for the kids (once again, Ray gets the short end, as his district has school!).  I spent over an hour & 20 min. outside yesterday shoveling the wettest HEAVIEST snow I've ever shoveled!  It was GREAT exercise, but my chest & arms were KILLING me last night!  I also did one of my 50 min. DVD's before dinner, so I got in some GREAT exercise yesterday, even though I had a house FULL of children! Open-mouthed  I am on a MISSION to get OUT of the 180's this week, to stay on "track" for my goal of 10 lbs. a month.  After weighing myself yesterday morning, that means I have TWO more pounds to lose by the end of the week ... NO PROBLEM, RIGHT? ... UGGGGHH!  Guess I should be THANKFUL for that snow, huh? Tongue out

So, today's 212 Principle is BELIEF.  The video states that 212 BELIEF fuels enthusiasm, & enthusiasm explodes into passion.  It fires our souls & lifts our spirits.  I can certainly see how this was the case when we first started this journey!  We believed that we could truly make a life-changing decision that would make ourselves AND our children stronger & more healthy.  We jumped in with both feet, setting up our space (or TRYING!), making "friends," starting a support group of other parents & immediately giving up MANY bad habits.  We committed to daily exercise & eating smarter.  We were happier & more energetic than we'd been in a LONG time!  Life was GOOD & we had a PASSION to succeed!

Flash forward 7 weeks ... a lot has happened & we've endured many challenging situations.  Monotony has set in & we realize that this isn't just a sprint ... it's going to be a MARATHON!  We have to get up EACH DAY & "start over" with our choices.  Some days, that is a GOOD thing (like when we've TOTALLY gotten off track some days!).  Other days, we want to crawl back into bed & say "NO MORE! I battled yesterday to eat right & exercise & I just CANNOT do it again today!"  THAT is when we have to stop & think about what we BELIEVE ... do we TRULY BELIEVE that this is what we want?

When you need that EXTRA DEGREE of passion or enthusiasm, reach deep down to the place where you set this plan into motion & SEE what results you are aiming for!  Do you want to fit into a special piece of clothing?  Are you aiming for a particular date that you want to look your best?  Is there a celebration you're looking forward to when you reach your goals?  Are you looking for a particular test result from your doctor?  Take a minute to visualize EXACTLY how you will look, how OTHERS will be looking at you & most IMPORTANTLY ... HOW DO YOU FEEL???  Are you standing TALL & PROUD?  Are you filled w/admiration for your partner's success?  Are others looking at you in awe & respect for what you've accomplished?  Do you feel overwhelmed by joy & happiness at finally reaching a goal once thought impossible??  Tap into THOSE feelings & let that picture RE-FUEL your energy & desire!

Are you having trouble "fine-tuning" that picture in your head?  Is your "belief" a little "fuzzy" at this point?  Then it's time to tap into this AWESOME community & gain your support from them, until you can muster up that belief yourself!  Find others that you "connect" with in some way & ask for their support!  We are ALL working from that same belief, that we can & WILL create a healthier life for ourselves ... tap into the MASSIVE passion that is fueling this movement & be PROUD that you are a part of something so AMAZING!!!  You wouldn't be here if you didn't BELIEVE you could make this change!

Today, I CHALLENGE you to really center on your vision of WHY you are doing this & allow that EXTRA DEGREE of BELIEF to re-fuel your PASSION & SPIRIT to continue on this marathon!!!  You CAN do it ... I BELIEVE in you!!! Open-mouthed

Take care, everyone & until next time .... drink some water, move a little & SMILE! Wink

    212 Principle #2 - KINDNESS!

I hope you're all having a FANTASTIC day!  We woke up to about 4 in. of snow & another 4-6 being called for today!  Needless to say, my little cherubs have no school & I'll have 3 other children here who's parents need to work, so I'll have a FULL HOUSE today with 9 kids total ... WHEW!  It's always fun, though, to get that "unexpected" day off from school ... poor Ray, his district didn't cancel (surprising since everyone around us is closed!), so he didn't get that little "gift" today!  Sorry, hon!

Well, today's 212 principle is all about kindness.  At first, I think we immediately think about our actions toward others.  How patient are we toward others in our lives?  How helpful are we to the neighbor or friend, or even stranger we come across in our daily life?  Do we take the time to really listen to our children & others in our lives? We all know what it means to be "kind toward others" ... but I think 212 kindness takes it "one degree further" & says, "How kind are you to YOURSELF?"  You can't truly be kind & loving toward others until you grant YOURSELF that gift!

One thing I'm learning in this journey is how HARD that can be!!!!  It is SOOOO much easier to "cheer others on" & give them words of encouragement & support when I "see" someone is down.  I am the first one to jump in & tell OTHERS to hang in there things WILL get better!  I am quick to remind them that a "gain" is part of this process & to be PROUD of their continued efforts!

Why, then, do I find it so difficult to give MYSELF that same "advice"??  Why am I so quick to "judge" myself & harbor negative thoughts/feelings about myself in my head?  Isn't the golden rule "treat others as you wish to be treated" ... if we're treating others with such kindness & respect, don't we deserve the same for ourseleves??

Today, I challenge you to show that "extra degree" of kindness not only toward others, but more importantly, TOWARD YOURSELF!  If you make a mistake, DON'T beat yourself up ... stop & think of what you would say to one of your "buddies" in the MPMU!  If you're feeling down about a "bummer weigh-in," see the POSITIVE steps you're taking to change it & MOVE FORWARD!  Find a quiet moment today to read, pray, relax, take a bath ... whatever makes YOU feel rejuvinated & "special" ... YOU DESERVE IT!!!!

Take a moment to share a random act of kindness with someone today ... & then do the SAME for yourself!  I'd LOVE to hear what you did, so please feel free to share!

Take care, everyone & until next time .... drink some water, move a little & SMILE! Wink

    212 Principle #1 - ATTITUDE!

As we start off the week, I thought this was the PERFECT way to get our minds "ready" for another week in this journey to better health!  As the "reality" sets in & we realize the permanence of making "good choices daily," we might start to feel disillusioned ... yet another day of fighting off cravings, battling our desire for inactivity, dealing w/"life situations" ... it becomes rather "un-exciting" when the scale slows down & we're seeing smaller numbers each week (or NO changes at all!).  THIS is the time we have to dig down & find our 212 ATTITUDE ... that one degree of effort that will force our bodies AND minds to accept the challenges & then MOVE FORWARD!  We all knew this would be a TOUGH journey & the ONLY WAY to stay on track is to keep a 212 ATTITUDE that will propel us into CONTINUED ACTION!  Every day, we wake up to a choice ... do we choose to CONTINUE this journey, despite the challenges, or do we toss in the towel?  The ATTITUDE you choose to put on makes ALL the difference!  I hope you will join me today in cultivating a 212 ATTITUDE that reminds you ALL DAY that you are WORTH this effort & you DESERVE to reach your goal!

212 ATTITUDE, according to the video, looks like this:  "The only thing that stands between a person and what they want in life is the WILL TO TRY IT & the FAITH to believe it's possible!"  Obviously, we ALL have the "will to try it" or we wouldn't still be here sharing struggles & triumphs each week!  What I'd like you to think about TODAY is this ...

do you HONESTLY have the FAITH to believe you CAN SUCCEED on this journey???

If you truly can't "VISUALIZE" or BELIEVE that you can conquer this challenge to lose weight & get healthy, then sadly enough, you won't!  We can all cheer you on & support you in EVERY WAY POSSIBLE, but until you deem yourself WORTHY ENOUGH to deserve this AND SEE IT as happening, then you will continue to struggle!  Unfortunately, no one can "give you" this faith.  I wish I could figure out a way to "bottle" a 212 ATTITUDE & send EACH of you that gift, but I can't.  You have to find it within yourself, with the help of whatever faith you call upon.  I believe God did NOT create me to be miserable & unhealthy.  He created an amazing body that deserves to be taken care of, so I can go out & bless the world with whatever gifts He has given me to share!

I urge you, today, to take OWNERSHIP of your ATTITUDE & go that EXTRA DEGREE to think positive in the midst of your challenges (we all have them MANY times a day!).  Begin SEEING yourself reaching that "finish line" & celebrating the WONDERFUL HEALTHY PERSON you've become!

212 ATTITUDE ... that ONE DEGREE OF EFFORT separates the GOOD from the GREAT!!!  So, make today GREAT by adjusting your attitude when necessary & finding a way to go that EXTRA degree!  How about joining us for 212 crunches or conquering 212 steps today ... it's YOUR choice!!

    212 Family 4th weigh-in ... it's a CLOSE one!

Hi gang!  Boy, it was obvious that EVERYONE had 212 DETERMINATION this week, as the final tally showed 4 teams w/in 1 TENTH of the winners losing percentage!  As we settle into the "grind" of this weekly lifestyle change, we can see how important that 212 FOCUS is going to be!!  I am SOOOOO proud of our 212 family, as almost EVERYONE either posted a loss, or maintained!!  Every pound lost is a victory over not only our bodies, but our MINDS as well!  These parents are PUSHING THROUGH the obstacles & MAKING the changes necessary to create healthier lives for themselves AND their children!!!  Way to go, guys!!!  Our 212 "BIGGEST LOSER" couple this week was Ray & I, with another 3 lbs. lost.  We won by only .06 lbs.!!! I am so PROUD of Ray, as he finally broke the 220 mark by hitting 218 this week!  He doesn't remember the last time he was below 220 ... probably before our 1st son came along 12 years ago!! GREAT JOB, honey!!   David & Kristi (2.8 lbs. lost) (www.kristi-david-weightloss.spaces.live.com) & Mike & Michelle  (2.9 lbs. lost)(www.mmullins94.spaces.live.com) were right on our heals with a .68% loss this week!  I want to mention the two other teams that were in the .6% range as well, Frank & Abby (2.4 lbs. lost - .64%) (www.thejimenezmenace.spaces.live.com) & Scott & Frances (3 lbs. lost - .61%) (www.scottandfrances.spaces.live.com).  With the losses so tight, I felt they deserved recognition as well! CONGRATULATIONS, again, to our ENTIRE 212 Family, for hanging tough for yet ANOTHER week in this journey!!!  May you each tackle this upcoming week with renewed  212 determination & enthusiasm!!  Smile

    W-Day tomorrow & I have NO IDEA where I'll stand ...

Hey everyone!  I just thought I'd post a quick message relating my FEAR about the weigh-in tomorrow!  I'm scared I'm getting to one of those "plateua" places, after losing about 15 lbs. fairly easily (I say that ONLY b/c I KNEW it would require MAJOR eating/moving changes & I have done those things fairly well).  I cheated this morning, by weighing in to see how my week is shaping up (plus I was "blessed" w/that time of the month again, so I KNEW things wouldn't be great & I wanted to see the damage!).  Anyway, I've busted my tail this week (doing 2 workouts a day since Wed.) & eating what I thought was good & the scale was NOT kind.  At 5am, it said I had gained 1.5 lbs. & at 9 am (BLESS my husband's heart for giving me a morning to SLEEP IN!!! LOVE him for that!!), the scale said I was up by .5 lbs.  I KNOW, I KNOW, weigh-in isn't until TOMORROW, but there is NO WAY I'm losing 2-3 lb.s OVERNIGHT (unless all this MUSCLE I've built up is going to magically MELT off those pounds today! Tongue out).  I am SOOOO focused on getting OUT of the 180's in Feb. & I don't have a whole lot of time to do it, now, as the month winds down!  I am trying really HARD to stay on that 10lbs. a month track & now I seem to be hitting a wall!

I CAN say that I truly AM building a lot of muscle, as my husband can attest to.  He felt my arms/legs the other day & was blown away by how SOLID they have become.  I can even feel the muscles in my abs when I tighten them (of course, they are still covered by the blubber, so NO WAY was he going to feel THOSE muscles! Wink), but they ARE there ... even those "obliques" that the instructor is always encouraging me to CRUNCH are getting tight!).  I know I wrote about being able to fit into clothes I couldn't, so my body IS changing & for that I'm thankful ... it's just that I don't know what else to do!  I'm exercising regularly (& VARYING the routines!) & eating OK (I think?) & drinking a TON of water (over 100 oz. a day) ... WHAT IS UP???  I NEED A PERSONAL TRAINER TO HELP ME NAVIGATE THIS COMPLEX JOURNEY!!

Since I don't have one ... maybe all of you could help me out.  Any suggestions?  HOW could I "jump-start" this losing game again?  What can I do to rev up my metabolism & get it burning again?  I can say I haven't been doing well w/eating those 5 smaller meals a day, as I just can't seem to fit in those "snacks." (I'm honestly NOT hungry for them!).   I'm SURE that would help, so I will focus on that this week.  Any other ideas from others that have hit this snag?  I have NO PLANS to give up & I'm not discouraged, b/c as I've said, I AM seeing changes, but that's not to say I'm not frustrated.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks, guys & enjoy a WONDERFUL WEEKEND!!!

Take care, everyone & until next time .... drink some water, move a little & SMILE! Wink

Not ready to count calories? Try these tips & offer yours, please!

Hey gang ... I KNOW it's all about "calories in/calories out" & I can honestly say, I'm TRYING!  However, it's a challenge for me in my  current life to figure out the EXACT calorie/fat/protien/fiber count in every bite I take.  That being said, I'm WAAAAAY further along than I've EVER been, just for the simple fact that I'm READING labels & making much better choices in those areas!  Obviously, I continue to lose an average of 2 lbs. a week, so I'm doing OK, but I've been stressing lately that if I didn't start accounting for EVERY MORSEL that went into my mouth, I would not reach my goal.  I understand that those that keep a food journal are the MOST successful & my ultimate goal would be to GET THERE; however, right now, that's just not possible & STRESSING about NOT keeping one is only making it worse!  I am doing OK w/my food choices & keeping to a STRONG exercise program each day, so for me, that is a HUGE improvement over what I was doing just a few short weeks ago!  I really can't "do it all" at once, or I think I'll throw in the towel, so I'm going to continue reading those labels & maybe incorporate a few of the tips below to really help me MAXIMIZE my dietary changes, until that food journal becomes a reality!  I thought maybe some of you would benefit from seeing the tips, too!  Enjoy & let me know what you think!!

By the way ... on a side note ... I absolutely HATE fruits & veggies.  I can stomach a few (broccoli, beans, strawberries & pineapple), but I'm SURE I NEED to really start incorporating even MORE variety.  Most of the time, it's a "texture" issue & I just have this horrible "gag" reflex when it comes to these healthy foods.  If ANYONE has some helpful hints on how to overcome this (or if you've done it yourself!) I'd LOVE to hear from you!  I want to overcome this, so I can really "do as I tell my children to do" & NOT "do as I SAY!"  THANKS!!  ~ Angie

    Lose Weight Without the Math

Sick of diets that are more complicated than your tax return? Here's how to ditch unwanted pounds--no calculator required

    Paige Greenfield

With all the weighing, measuring, and calorie totaling, dropping a few pounds can seem as mind-bending as high school calculus. But it doesn't have to be. "Of course calories count," says Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.D., a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, "but there are plenty of ways to cut them without a math Ph.D." In fact, some simple lifestyle changes are often more effective than obsessive number crunching. Follow these four strategies and the only figure you'll be thinking about is the smokin' one in the mirror.

Instead counting calories - Try joining a club
Because Keeping a running total is a little like guessing how many jelly beans are in a Mason jar. According to a 2006 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, Americans--even those who are at a healthy weight-consistently lowball the number of calories in large fast-food meals by up to 38 percent.

For portion control without the decimal points, sign up for a delivery service like DeliciouslyYours (ediets.com) or Health Management Resources (hmrprogram.com). They deliver meals in just-right sizes to your doorstep each week. And the foods they consist of are usually high in fiber and protein, so you won't feel deprived, says Anne Fletcher, R.D., author of Thin for Life.

Another, er, plus: The smaller portions train you to recognize proper serving sizes, so you'll make smarter choices when the prepackaged grub is out of reach. You can enroll in a meal-delivery service for $12 to $20 a day; there are good options in the freezer aisle too, says Elisa Zied, R.D., author of So What Can I Eat?! Look for frozen meals that have less than 500 calories and have at least four grams of fiber, no more than 15 grams of fat (fewer than three grams saturated and no trans fat), and fewer than 700 milligrams of sodium.

Instead eating by food ratios - Try eye-balling labels
Because If diets like the Zone, Atkins, or South Beach didn't work for you, it may not be because you couldn't give up bagels. It could be because you're too darn busy to bother updating percentages and ratios at every meal. If you don't have Rain Man keeping tabs on your meals, try this instead: Take 15 seconds to scan food labels for key ingredients. According to a 2007 report by the USDA Economic Research Service, we spend an average of 30 percent of our annual grocery bill on foods such as muffins, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, crackers, ice cream, candy, soda, and doughnuts--foods whose ingredients lists have sugar at or near the top. It's a pretty big duh that sweeteners jack up calories, but they also take your blood sugar on a roller-coaster ride that lands you right back at the fridge. We call it the theory of "calories in, calories in."

End the snacking madness by making natural, whole foods the bulk of your diet. That includes fruits, veggies, and lean meats such as chicken, turkey, flank steak, pork chops, and fish. And when stocking up on packaged foods, choose ones "that list whole foods, such as whole-wheat flour, oats, peanuts, and real fruit, in the first line of ingredients," Zied says. That's your clue that a food is lower in calories and higher in fiber and protein than one with a lot of high-fructose corn syrup, sugar, molasses, or even honey.

Instead of logging 30 minutes on the treadmill - Try pumping up to scale down
Because According to a recent review by a Duke University medical researcher, treadmill displays inflate the number of calories you burn by 10 to 15 percent. The study also found that 20 percent of us reward ourselves after exercise by eating as many calories as we worked off--and that we're less inclined to get physical after a strenuous workout for two to six hours. That's when we'll veg out on the couch instead of do housework.

A more efficient way to counteract dessert is to pump iron. Though cardio torches more calories minute-for-minute than lifting, weight training keeps your internal furnace going long after you put down the dumbbells. A study in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that after six months of lifting weights three days a week, subjects increased their resting metabolic rate (that's the number of calories you burn just sitting on your butt) by 7 percent. To squeeze the most out of every curl and squat, speed it up: Another study in the same journal found that lifting quickly (for example, during a squat, lowering for two seconds, then coming up as fast as you can) fries calories 11 percent faster than lifting slowly. Researchers think the explosive movements create more calorie-melting muscle contractions.

Instead of measuring each bite - Try enjoying each bite
Because Being a slave to your kitchen scale won't make the one in your bathroom budge faster. A 2007 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirmed that it is possible to eat more and still slim down. The study compared weight loss in two groups of obese women. All of them were told to eat a reduced-fat diet, but one group was also instructed to consume a lot of water-rich foods, like soups, fruits, and vegetables. That group ate 25 percent more food by volume but lost more weight (an average of 17.5 pounds versus 14). How? They were eating fewer calories, but were still satisfied, thanks to the foods' high water content. "Physical activity was the same in both groups, so if the people in one group lost more, they had to have eaten fewer calories," says lead study author Barbara Rolls, Ph.D.

Instead of measuring your meals, try a more measured approach to eating. It takes your brain 12 to 15 minutes to receive the signal that your stomach is at max capacity, so wait for it. If you pause between bites, chances are you'll get that signal before you've scarfed down seconds. Don't have that kind of self-control? Choose foods that are impossible to bolt down: produce you have to peel, nuts in the shell, and spicy foods.

Week 7 down & reality is setting in ...

Well, I don't know about you, but I'm really starting to see some POSITIVE changes from this journey we are taking.  Has it been EASY ... NO WAY!!  Am I even CLOSE to being done ... NO WAY!  But what I AM seeing is a GLIMPSE of what is to come & I LIKE it!!!  I was determined to lose 2 HEALTHY pounds a week (on average).  Since we just finished week 7 & I have lost a total of 14 lbs., I'd say I've hit that one pretty dead on! Wink  I wasn't always HAPPY when I saw a TEENY little loss (.3) or even a big fat ZERO lbs. lost (after busting my TAIL w/exercise & eating right!), but overall, I've been working on a good steady loss, which will KEEP those pounds off FOREVER!  I thought I'd share a few "reflections" I had this weekend, thinking over the past 7 weeks:

Every DAY I choose to make good or poor choices for my body!  I tend to be an "all or nothing" kind of gal.  I like "instant" gratification & I like to see RESULTS.  I have had to challenge myself to STOP thinking this way, b/c before, if I made a "slip" in my eating/exercising, I would simply "GIVE UP" b/c I'd "failed" anyway & WHY BOTHER!  Now, I am viewing this as a LIFETIME of choices that I get to make EACH day.  Sure, I'm human & I "mess up" from time to time, but that's the GREAT part about being human ... I can CHOOSE to make a BETTER choice at the very next meal, or I can make the choice to get up off the couch & "MOVE MY MASS," as Ray likes to say!  Smile  Sometimes it takes ALL I HAVE to lace up those shoes & exercise, or NOT put that piece of chocolate in my mouth, but I KNOW, IN THE LONG RUN, THAT CHOICE will make me happier, so I CHOOSE to delay the gratification & do what I KNOW will be best!

Being accountable to others is a NECESSITY for me!  I cannot do this alone, so I am BLESSED to be in this supportive community, where I can share my thoughts & gain strength from others!  I LOVE being able to cheer others on & I am grateful when others acknowledge the work Ray & I are doing ... I get such motivation from that & I thank EACH OF YOU who have seen to it that we are supported along the way!!  It's ALL of your little "voices" that ENCOURAGE ME to make those "good choices" each day & for that, I am truly blessed!!!

Sharing this journey w/Ray is a MUST for the longevity of our family!  Who was I kidding, thinking we were not going to suffer any "consequences" of the bad choices we were making?  Just because we hadn't dropped dead of a heart attack, didn't mean our bodies were w/o problems!  I know for a fact that the high blood pressure I had in the fall was a "wake up call" for me to say, "Whoa, maybe I'm NOT invinceable" & I NEED to get healthy for myself AND my children!  (Not to mention Ray's high cholesterol & such!).  Having Ray & I do this together makes it a "family" activity & now our KIDS are learning how & WHY it's soooo important to make those "good choices" each day!  Seeing them eat truly "healthy" snacks, over the "supposed" healthy ones I was trying to feed them says it ALL!  They learn quickly & it is OUR job to make sure we give them every opportunity to grow healthy & strong!!

Hearing someone say, "are you losing weight?" really DOES make you feel good!  No matter HOW MUCH I've said that I didn't "care" what others thought, or that I was doing this for my health, etc. ... hearing someone (other than my kids & Ray) recognize my efforts (when they had NO IDEA I was part of this challenge!) really helps you to see that you ARE changing, even if it seems to be at a SNAIL'S pace!! Tongue out I WANT others to continue to recognize those efforts & I want Ray to be just as proud of me as he is!  I may say I "don't care what others think," but I guess deep down, I really do a little bit!  Hey, if I have to use THAT for motivation ... why not??

I really DO have the power to make good decisions, even when they aren't the BEST for me!  Ray & I have already been "tested" several times w/eating out & yesterday was a PRIME example for me.  I went out to lunch w/my mom to Olive Garden & ended up ordering an "ooey-gooey" pasta w/chicken & spinach.  Now, this is something I LOVE & would have DEVOURED previously; however, I KNEW it was not a good choice to eat the entire thing at once, so I asked for a "to-go" box IMMEDIATELY & put 1/2 to 3/4 into the box right away.  My mom thought I was NUTS & couldn't BELIEVE I wouldn't eat it all (she was quite happy finishing her entire plate ... until we were walking to the car & she started complaining that she felt sick b/c she was SOOOO stuffed!).  I "nursed" one soda (which I have pretty much given up on a daily basis!) during the whole meal (my mom had 3 GIANT ones!) & left feeling quite satisfied & PROUD of my efforts.  Had I chosen the most HEALTHY meal for me ... most likely, NO!  But I HAD found a way to enjoy a SMALL part of it & save the rest for another time (or share w/Ray or the kids today!).  You see, I KNOW I will NEVER stick to this "healthy lifestyle" if I cannot indulge in a few "taboo foods" once in a while (or skip my exercise for the day w/o guilt) ... but what I DO know now, is that I have the POWER to step back & decide HOW I want to proceed in these situations.  I could have TOTALLY blown my mom off b/c I couldn't "dine healthy" at that restaurant (I'm pretty picky!) or I could say, I would LOVE to join her AND enjoy a SMALL PORTION of something I will have VERY RARELY!!  All things in moderation, right???Wink

It is FUN finding out that you are starting to fit into "old clothes" that once seemed IMPOSSIBLE!  Yesterday, I was able to wear a pair of jeans & a top that were COMPLETELY OUT OF THE QUESTION in January (trust me, I TRIED!).  I was honestly SHOCKED that they fit & I only put them on b/c all of my other jeans were in the laundry & I needed SOMETHING to wear!  When I slid them on (sz. 13-14!), I almost CRIED!  I couldn't even BELIEVE I could button them! (Granted, they are of that "stretch" version, which is a bit more forgiving ... but hey, there wasn't enough S-T-R-E-T-C-H in the WORLD for those puppies in Jan.!!!).  Anyway, I figured I'd might as well try on the shirt, too.  I couldn't even BUTTON the thing over my belly in Jan. & now I could button AND I had some "room to groove"!!  It is a little more "fitted" through the waist (unlike the normal "baggy T-shirt attire" that I typically wear) & Ray let me know right away how "GREAT!" I looked (isn't he SWEET!!!).  He said he's definitely seeing it in my face & now through my body, too, so I GUESS this hard work IS paying off!  I can't WAIT to shop for things in a SMALLER size!!!

I have more energy & motivation than EVER before!  I learned thes last week while Ray was gone for 3 days!  I had sick kids, NO HELP & all the "normal" duties of being mom.  I STILL managed to get everything done AND I forced myself to work out AFTER the little ones were in bed, which I have NEVER done before in my LIFE!  My mom finally called on Saturday to see if I "needed" anything or if I wanted to take a magazine & head out to Panera for an hour or 2 until Ray came home, just to get out of the house.  Can you believe I said "no thank you, but I'd LOVE it if you could just come over anyway, so I could run down to the basement & work out BEFORE he gets home!"  I had spent the day cleaning w/the kids who weren't sick & I desperatly wanted to get in a workout, too, but I didn't want to do it when Ray got home.  Again, my mom was SHOCKED, but she agreed.  After about 45 min. she yelled down to the basement to see if I was "all right" (apparently she feared my body could not take exercise for that long! HAHA!).  When I came up after about an hour & 10 min., she took one look at me & said, is THAT what you do every day?  Are you SURE you're not "overdoing it"?  Nope, I felt GREAT!  If someone had told me just 7 weeks ago that I would be making time at the END of my busy-crazy days to EXERCISE for an hour, I would have exploded w/laughter!  Now, I KNOW it HAS to be done & I MAKE THE TIME for it!!!  I am feeling better than I've felt in a LONG time & I can race up the stairs after my 20 mo. old w/out getting out of breath or my legs SCREAMING in pain!  I WANT to eat better & exercise b/c I have a lot of people "watching" me & I want to PROVE that I CAN do this!!!  I LOVE a challenge & this one is the ULTIMATE!!!

So, I could go on forever, but I just wanted others to see that, although this journey is NOT easy, we can EACH start to see the MANY little "benefits" & "motivators" in our lives, if we're just kind enough to ourselves to see them!  We are often so HARD on ourselves that we just GIVE UP out of frustration.  I'm here to tell you that w/6 kids, a homeschooler, daycare kids that I watch & a BAZILLION after-school acivities that I could EASILY toss in the towel most days!  Things NEVER go as I plan, but part of this journey is learning how to be FLEXIBLE, but stay on track &, based on what I'm seeing so far, ... it's TOTALLY POSSIBLE!!!  I hope you will stick to it, too, b/c it's SOOOOOO gonna be worth it!!! Open-mouthed

Take care, everyone & until next time .... drink some water, move a little & SMILE! Wink

Teachers are WAAAY overpaid, don't you think??

OK, so this has NOTHING to do w/getting healthy or losing weight, but I know there are MANY fellow teachers in this challenge & rather than emailing them all individually, I figured I'd just post this here!  If you are a teacher, this will really make you SMILE!  If you are NOT a teacher & you have children ... PLEASE thank your child's  teacher this month with a brief hand-written note or conversation!  If you are not a teacher & have no children, then maybe this will simply cause you to stop & think about YOUR favorite teacher & how the inspired you in a special way!  I'd LOVE for you to share who your favorite teacher was & why ... who knows, maybe he/she is even part of this challenge & will SEE it!!  As teachers, just KNOWING that we've made a difference in a child's life is often the BEST payment of all!!

n honor of my hubby, who is away from his family for 3 days to learn how to be an even BETTER teacher (even though he's already AMAZING!), I'm posting this here ....

My dad (a teacher for over 30 yrs.) sent this to Ray & I.  As fellow educators, we KNEW you'd appreciate seeing this ... we DEFINITELY don't enter this profession for the MONEY, do we???!!!  Tongue out

AREN'T YOU ALL SICK OF THOSE HIGH-PAID TEACHERS??

Their hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work nine or
ten months a year! It's time we put things in perspective and pay them
    for what they do...baby-sit!

We can get that for less than minimum wage. That is right. I would give
them  $3.00 dollars an hour and only the hours they worked, not any of
    that silly planning time.

That would be $19.50 a day (7:45 AM to 4:00 PM with 45 min. off for
    lunch).

Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit
    their children.

    Now, how many do they teach in a day... maybe 30? So that's 19.5 X 30 =
$585.00 a day.  However, remember they only work 180 days a year!
I am not going to pay them for any vacations.

    Let's see . . .. that's $585 x 180 = $105,300 per year.
(Hold on! My calculator must need batteries!)

What about those special teachers and the ones with Master's degrees?
Well, we could pay them minimum wage just to be fair, round it off to
    $7.00 an hour.
That would be $7 times 6-1/2 hours times 30 children times 180 days =
    $245,700.00 per year.

Wait a minute, there is something wrong here!
    There sure is, duh!
Make a teacher smile; send this to someone who appreciates teachers!

    (Average teacher salary $50,000/180 days = $277per day/30 students =
$9.23/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student.) Very inexpensive
babysitter and they even educate your kids! Crazy!

(by the way ... the average salary in THIS area isn't even CLOSE to that!  Don't forget, most teachers have to go back & get their Master's degree, too!  I can tell you that the payments for the loans Ray had to take out to pay for his Master's don't even come CLOSE to being covered by the "increase in pay" that he got for GETTING the Master's Degree!  CRAZY, huh??!!)

A note to my "Valentine" ...

Since my hubby & I are separated on this special holiday, I figured I'd take a moment to send him a little note, in case he gets a chance to hop online while he's away.  If you don't care to read, no problem ... I'll post an update for EVERYONE soon!  For those who choose to read ... be warned that the last paragraph is a little "mushy," ... hey, it's to my sweetie & it IS Valentine's Day, after all!!! Wink

Hi Honey!  I'm not sure if you'll have access to a computer to check our space while you're gone or not, but I already miss you terribly!  The kids & I celebrated a fun day together (complete w/pink milk ... heart shaped pink pancakes come tomorrow, since Dad was here tonight! Smile).  I'm glad you arrived in Florida safely & I hope your conference teaches you TONS of new things to use in your classroom!  You are such an AMAZINGLY AWESOME teacher & I KNOW this will only make you MORE extraordinary!!!  I know you also "worry" about all of us back here at home, but know that we're all FINE & looking forward to your safe return Sat. night!!

It was a BUSY CRAZY day (nothing new, right??), but we survived!  I even got in my 50 min. TOUGH routine tonight, after Noah went to bed.  The kids finished cleaning up from dinner & got ready for bed, while I zipped downstairs & ROCKED IT OUT!!  Who would have thought, just 7 SHORT weeks ago, that I would be WORKING OUT at 8pm???  I was going to "bag it" once Dad finally left, but I just felt "off" & KNEW that I had a GOAL to achieve this week & skimping on my exercise is NOT going to get me there!  I know you're committed to continuing to do as much as you can to stay on track while you're gone & I'm cheering you on from here!! Party Make GREAT use of the hotel gym & pound that water!!!  Eat as sensibly as you can & know I'm doing the same!!!

I love you, honey, & I thank God for you every day!  You are the most AMAZING husband & father a woman could EVER ask for & I am so blessed to be the one you call your wife!  Your dedication, kindness, & compassion towards your family is so wonderful & I thank you for always thinking of ways to help "lighten the load" for me!  I could NEVER do this without you!  I look forward to celebrating a lifetime of HEALTHY Valentine's Days with the sweetest Valentine I could EVER ask for!!!  I Love You!

It's all about the FOCUS ...

“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hi gang!  The quote above is one I've LOVED since I got a plaque w/that saying in 7th. gr.  It helps me to remember that I will face challenges EVERY DAY, but it is within me (through the power of God!) that I am able to CHOOSE how to respond & tackle them!!  Below is a letter I sent out to our "212" teammates, after receiving one from another member about how she had made an INCREDIBLE EFFORT to walk on her treadmill for 2 hrs. & 12 min. last night during BL!!!! (Way to go, Tammie!!)  It was so inspiring to me, b/c I could really start to see how our MINDSETS are changing, no matter how many "challenges" the day throws our way!  Just recently, I'd have NEVER made the effort I did to accomplish my goal of "moving my body" before bed!  I simply would have collapsed onto the couch & called it a day, saying, "try again tomorrow!"  Well, NO MORE!  It's AMAZING to me that Ray & I are becoming so much more conscious of what/how we eat & making sure we get in our exercise each day!  We booked our tickets to a family wedding in June & I am SOOOOO determined to go & finally NOT be the "fat one" in the pics. this time!!  I've spent 11 yrs. pregnant/nursing or "recovering" from having a baby & had all the excuses in the world ... NO MORE!  I want to be the "Hot Mamma" of 6 AWESOME kids!!!  Open-mouthed  This challenge & all of the AMAZING people that we've "met" along the way is really the ONLY reason we are able to stay so strong & focused!  Having our 212 family really forces me to stay accountable even more & I THANK THEM for that!!!!  Check out my thoughts below & let me know how YOU are "staying FOCUSED" on your goals DESPITE your challenges!!!

WOW, Tammie!  I'd say your 212 determination really KICKED IN & I'm SURE it's going to pay off this week!  I'm SCARED, now!! Surprised  Like you, my day didn't go EXACTLY as planned, since our youngest came down w/a nasty fever & was pretty miserable all day.  He really just wanted to be held & I couldn't skip out on him to do my normal workout!  By the time Ray got home from work, I was exhausted (just from being "mommy" all day!) & collapsed on the couch for a while (PERFECT time to get in a workout, but I just couldn't do it).  So, after dinner, Ray went out to snow blow our driveway & I went out to move the car ... I ended up outside for over an HOUR shoveling the ICE/SNOW mix that had settled on the driveway!  I had just started scraping off the walkway & porch, but once I got going, I realized I could use the shoveling as some SERIOUS exercise, since the snow was wet & HEAVY!  I was SWEATING & it was raining, but I didn't care ... one way or another I was getting in my exercise for the day! Tongue out  I was TOTALLY pumped (& POOPED!) after I was done & I came in ready to tackle our 212 day challenge ... 212 stairs!  I think Ray thought (hoped!) I'd forgotten (or given up doing them!), but I ran up & changed clothes, laced up my shoes & stationed my kids at the bottom of the stairs to count!  15 trips later, I had accomplished my goal & WOW, was it a CHALLENGE!  Ray went right after me (we're not quite thin enough to both fit on the stairs at the SAME time ... YET! Open-mouthed) & he ROCKED!  It was really fun having the kids there "cheering us on"!  Hearing them shouting at us, "Come on mom/dad, only 4 more times ... you can do it!" as our pace slowed was really inspiring!  They were just as excited as we were when we were done!  I talked about how TIRED I'd been from my day & how the LAST thing I'd wanted to do was "exercise," but that getting outside & shoveling gave me energy & made me feel excited to take on the 212 day challenge!  I wanted them to see that sometimes the LAST THING you feel like doing is exercise, but "just doing it" will really make you feel BETTER in the long run!  After a long day, it was fun to hear the cheering & laughing/giggling!

And guess what, Tammie ... we weren't done there!  Once we got the kids all tucked into bed, I told Ray I was doing my 212 crunches b/c I hadn't really "exercised" that area during the day (& heaven knows it's an area that does NOT need neglecting!!).  Anyway, I think he was a little shocked & BUMMED, but he wouldn't let me do them alone.  I was TOTALLY FINE cranking them out before we sat to watch BL, but he wouldn't hear of having me down on the floor doing them alone, so he joined me!  Yep, we rocked out 212 crunches (w/very FEW BREAKS in between sets!) & I felt like a MILLION BUCKS!  I may not have gotten in the "exercise" planned for the day, but I had sure made a 212 EFFORT to modify it as best I could, to make SURE my body did SOMETHING (& BOY, can this body FEEL it this morning!  I have sore muscles where I haven't had sore muscles since STARTING this journey!!!)Smile

THANK YOU, to our 212 teammates, for really spurring us on yesterday!!  Like Tammie & Glenn, Ray & I want those "bragging rights" back & we're working HARD to make that happen this week!  Watch out, b/c we have 212 FOCUS for what needs to be done!!!Open-mouthed

May you all enjoy a WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY & make EVERY MOVEMENT count!!!!

    212 DETERMINATION ROCKS!!!!

    212 Second Weigh-In ...

We had the second weigh-in of our little "support group" named "212" & it wasn't as close as last week!  Almost all 9 teams posted a LOSS for the week, but Frank & Abby claimed the win easily w/a 7 lb. loss (1.8%)!  Mike & Michelle (http://mmullins94.spaces.live.com) were our second place finishers with 4.2 lbs. lost (1%)!  Frank (http://thejimenezmenace.spaces.live.com) had the highest personal % lost, with 2.3% for the week!  We had MANY teams with a 1-2 lb. loss per person & others of us who struggled with smaller losses (or even big fat ZERO'S!), but everyone stuck with it & showed 212 FOCUS to stay on track, NO MATTER WHAT!  We had FUN doing our "212 Challenge" & really reached out to support those in our group who had a bit of a struggle this week.  The "winners" of our 212 Family this week are Frank & Abby, so they have come up with a FABULOUS challenge to help us stay connected to our "VALENTINE" this week! Red heart What a FUN way to remind us each day that we are IN THIS TOGETHER!!  I am just SOOOOO excited to be a part of this "little family" of other parents who are working HARD to change their lives for themselves AND for their children!!  I am proud of ALL the hard work they put forth this week (amidst the many "challenges" that life always seems to bring) & I can't WAIT to cheer EACH of them on to even MORE success this week!  Keep it up, gang ... I'm SOOOO proud of you!!  212 DETERMINATION DOES make the difference!!!

Until next time ... drink some water, move a little & SMILE! Wink

    February 10

Gotta take my own "cheerleading" this week!

Well, I've spent the week cheering on others who seemed to be having a "tough" week.  I really tried to encourage them when they were continuing to work hard & NOT see the results on the scale.  I just did NOT want them to give up, so I did all I could to encourage, support & motivate them to continue the journey, as we're ALL in this for the "long haul"!!  Well, the scale certainly got even with me today ... NO LOSS/NO GAIN!  I have been moving along at a steady clip of about 2 lbs. per week (last week I had 3!).  I had yet to experience a "plateu" or gain, so I was happy to just be plugging along!  Well, I knew the week got off to a rocky start w/the kids all sick & me not doing what I normally do, but I really tried to "kick it up" here by the mid-end of week & I thought I'd AT LEAST lose a pound (added EXTRA workouts & really tried to be smart about food intake!).  Well, it wasn't meant to be.  I can tell you as someone who just got on the scale & saw NO CHANGE after working so hard here the past few days, it's a VERY BIG BUMMER, as so many of you know!  The only GOOD thing I can take away is that I've given out so much "positive" advice & encouragement this week, that I'm just going to have to swallow some of my own, b/c I'm SURE NOT GIVIN' UP!!!! Wink

For the first time in what seems like FOREVER I'm feeling muscles that are MUCH stronger (even those deeply hidden abs!!) ... hey, maybe I've added "muscle wt." this week & that's why I'm seeing no change on the scale, huh? I'll be HAPPY when that extra muscle kicks in this week & starts burning OODLES more calories! Open-mouthed

For the first time in a LONG time, I'm not doing the "double arm STRETCH" every time I put on a T-shirt (ladies, you know the drill ... pull on your shirt, place BOTH ARMS up inside & PULL as hard as you can to give your belly a little more "wiggle room" in that shirt ... the ultimate RESISTANCE TRAINING at times!) Embarrassed!  I almost jumped for joy when I put on a T-shirt to work out this week & it barely skimmed my belly (if at ALL in some shirts!) ... WOOHOOO!! Tongue out  I guess I'm making progress!

For the first time since STARTING this journey, I'm being forced to think about the CALORIES I'm eating during the week.  So far, both Ray & I have really just made a lot of changes to the portions of our meals AND what we were eating (making healthy options for meals & dumping soda, sugar, etc.).  Now, I'm starting to think we need to be more serious about COUNTING OUT those calories, b/c maybe we're not getting ENOUGH (or maybe we're eating more than we think??).  Ray went on a site this morning & found he should be eating 1800 calories ... I can guarantee he's nowhere NEAR that, which might explain his smaller losses.  I have to go check out what I SHOULD be eating, but I'd say I'm probably not doing what I should, as I've not been good about eating my healthy "snacks" btw. meals consistently.  I'm eating good small healthy meals, but NOT snacks, so maybe I've got to step it up, too???  So this week's SLOWDOWN for Team Lowe is forcing us to start "counting calories" this week ... a whole NEW ballgame that we're going to struggle with, I'm sure.  I'm guessing we'll be back here asking LOTS of questions from all of you PROS!!!!  It seems SOOOO complicated to me, but I guess if I USED the BL weight-loss site that I PAYED for back in Dec., it would really HELP, HUH???  I only have the site until Feb. 14, so I guess I should get in & really look around before it expires!!

So, even though Ray & I had a TOUGH week on the scale, I still had some small "victories" that I can be PROUD of, I know.  I won't lie, it's still a HARD thing to see those numbers pop up that you DO NOT want to see again!!!  I know Ray was KILLING to say good-bye to the 220's & he's stuck here again this week!  I have CONFIDENCE that we'll "figure things out" this week & we'll BOTH have a GREAT week next week (so WATCH OUT 212 Family ... we'll be back STRONG next week!Wink)!!!  I'm just so PROUD of his continued dedication & our commitment to this together!  We are really FOCUSED on making this a lifestyle CHANGE for us AND for our family!!!  THANK YOU to BL for lighting that fire under our butts ... for that, we'll be forever GRATEFUL!!!

To our 212 Family ... we can't WAIT to crown another new CHAMP this week!!!  How FUN it will be to salute YOU this week!!  I can't wait to get everyone's weigh-in numbers, so we can PLASTER it on our space!!  You guys are AWESOME & I KNOW you've worked hard this week!!!  We're blessed to be sharing this journey with each of you!!!

Until next time ... drink some water, move a little & SMILE! Wink

Running ... is it REALLY necessary?? Please say "NO!"

Hey gang!  So it's been a LOOONG week so far.  Lots of sick little ones at home (various kids on different days ... one of the JOYS of having a large family ... they're always SO KIND to share! Tongue out).  Anyway, Ray & I are still hanging tough by NOT catching their little "cootie bugs," but we'll see how long that lasts ... it CERTAINLY seems to be going around!!  Needless to say, my week has almost "gotten away" from me & I'm JUST NOW hitting my exercise "stride" (good news for all my "212" challengers, I KNOW!! Wink).  I did Tae-Bo this morning for an HOUR after seeing it on someone elses space ... I had totally FORGOTTEN we had the DVD's & I needed a "change" in my routine anyway ... man, did it KICK MY BUTT!  It felt GREAT & I was SHOCKED at how long I could "stick w/it," but it was HARD!  I feel TOTALLY motivated to work out again, though, this afternoon when Ray gets home & I KNOW I'll really kick it into gear here for the end of our week!  My eating has been fairly good this week, w/Monday being the exception.  We had leftover b-day cake from my daughter's b-day & I found myself CRAVING a piece after lunch.  I was in a "mopey Monday mood" & had not showered, exercised or even had as much water as I normally do by lunchtime that day.  I TOTALLY know it was the "funk" I was in that pushed me to actually EAT the stupid piece of cake & let me tell you, I SOOOOO regretted it for the rest of the day!  NOT b/c it "blew my calories" out of the water for the day, or b/c I had "backslid" (is that even a WORD??) by eating it ... honestly, it was b/c it made me feel SOOOO SICK!!!  I have really cut out almost 90% of the sugar I WAS eating COLD TURKEY since starting this!  I have really tried to steer clear as much as possible b/c it gets me into trouble by wanting MORE of it!  Well, that piece of cake had PLENTY of sugar in it (not to mention a MILLION other "bad for you things"!) & it just SAT like a brick in my stomach!  When I went to change my son's diaper before his nap that afternoon, I was literally GAGGING b/c it felt like it was stuck in my THROAT (no, it was NOT from my son's STINKY diaper b/c he happened to be CLEAN!! HA HA!) Open-mouthed.  After I laid him down, I ran into my bathroom & continued gagging for a bit.  Honestly, I thought I would feel better if I could just get it OUT, but no WAY could I do it!  I simply had to suffer the HORRIBLE feeling I had from it the rest of the day.  I really did feel like CRUD that whole day/night & I didn't even work out b/c I felt so awful (& b/c my first "sick child" arrived late that afternoon & needed LOTS of "cuddle time"!!).

Anyway, I'm sharing b/c I've thought about that silly piece of cake ALL WEEK & how much of an IMPACT it had on how I felt ... and to think, I was eating stuff like that almost EVERY DAY before starting this challenge!  How SCARY that I was feeling like that ALL THE TIME & just ACCEPTED IT b/c I WANTED to taste that food!!!  Although I am still not CRAVING fruits & veggies Smile, my body really is NOT craving the sweets like it was & THAT feels good!!!  I've honestly felt more energetic & "happy" than I've felt in a LONG time & I KNOW that's b/c I'm feeding my body better AND giving it some EXERCISE!!

Now ... about this "running" thing ... I heard on BL this week (I think it was this week??), that "running is the BEST way to drop the pounds" ... just GREAT!  The one thing I DESPISE doing & THAT is the BEST way to lose the weight??? Sad I cannot even BEGIN to describe how much I HATE to run.  I have NEVER done it for "hobby" & when I've been forced to, I honestly feel like I'm going to DIE.  It's really not usually my BODY that wants to give in, it's my LUNGS!  They just feel like they're going to EXPLODE if I don't STOP! (& I've NEVER been a smoker!!  I did have asthma as a child & was recently told it was "back," but I'm sure that's not it!).  Anyway, I just wanted to ask all of you KNOWLEDGEABLE people out there in BL Land ... IS IT TRUE???  Do I HAVE to run to really lose the weight I WANT to?  The reason I ask is b/c I have HONESTLY been toying w/FORCING myself to run a 5K just to say "I DID IT"!  (We have a neighbor who is a SERIOUS runner ... think Alcatraz Triatholon!) & he's ALWAYS trying to get Ray & I to start running.  I'm just AFRAID to even give it a go b/c I think I'd die!!!  BUT, if it will TRULY speed up my weight loss, then I think I HAVE to give it serious consideration!  I saw on someone's space that they are working a program called the "Couch to 5K" running plan, which is designed to get you up off the couch & RUNNING 3 miles in TWO MONTHS!  It can be found at www.coolrunning.com  Anyway, it sounds SOOOO intimidating to me (I like my intense little workout DVD's!), but I'm willing to give it a try if you all think it would help!  What do you think??? Has anyone else who HATES running ever tried to do it for more than a week (or even a day???).  I'd LOVE to hear from you!!

Well, school is almost over & I've gotta get ready for the return of my "healthy" gang!  Take care, everyone & PLEASE share your thoughts on "RUNNING" (or anything else!) w/me!

Until next time ... drink some water, move a little & SMILE! Wink

212 CHALLENGE of the week ...

Each week, the "biggest loser" team from our 212 group is encouraged to issue a "challenge" to the other teams.  It can be about food, exercise, emotions, WHATEVER they think will push the other teams to SUCCESS in the upcoming week (we just remind that team that if they don't want to fall BELOW that yellow line, THEY had better be willing to do that challenge, too!!)Wink  Last week, our group did 212 crunches (or some other form of repetitive exercise) during the Biggest Loser.  Many of the teams went on to continue that challenge on their own ALL WEEK!  It was actually MOTIVATING to know that your "extended family" was right there w/you "sweating it out" each day!!  I know it REALLY helped me stay accountable (& keep Ray's butt MOVING!) througout the week, right honey!!??. Open-mouthed

This week, Ray & I have continued w/the "212 theme" & figured out a way to get in an EXTRA HOUR of exercise w/o even "feeling" it! Tongue out Check out the challenge below & feel free to join in with our "212 Family" as we continue moving toward stronger, longer lives!

As the "winning couple" this week, we figured we'd continue our "212" theme (once again, I have nixed Ray's idea for eating 212 wings this week! Sarcastic) To help us continue down this healthy path, let's go with this ....

We challenge EACH of you to drink "2 EXTRA glasses of water" & do "12 minutes of EXTRA exercise" at least 5 out of 7 days this week!  Tongue out

So, you'll be getting in the water you SHOULD be drinking AND you'll get an extra HOUR of cardio, strength training, crunches ... WHATEVER, w/o even KNOWING it this week! Simply do your normal exercise routine & add 12 minutes, or take 2 "smaller" breaks during the day & whip out 6 minutes of abs, jump rope, jumping jacks, squats, you name it (I know the 212 crunches we were doing last week lasted about 8-10 min., depending on how many "breaks" we took, so having 2 "smaller sessions" during the day is TOTALLY doable!)

I know you will ALL accept this challenge b/c several of you are VERY competitive & have already made it known that you're "after us" this week!  Wink  Getting an EXTRA hour of "exercise" in can only HELP us reach our goals this week & drinking that water is KEY! May you all have "212 DETERMINATION" to complete the challenge this week!

    NOTES:
    • Don't forget to share your "212 challenge" experience with us ... let us know how you're doing!

ENJOY & HAVE A FUN WEEK!!!!

    212 Family - 1st weigh-in results ... NOT FIXED!! :o)

OK, so we had the first weigh-in of our little "support group" that we've named "212" & it was a CLOSE ONE!!!  All 9 teams posted a LOSS for the week & Ray & I won by only .3 lbs.  Scott & Frances (http://scottandfrances.spaces.live.com) were on our HEALS with a 1.4% loss!  Ray & Abby (http://thejimenezmenace.spaces.live.com) tied for the highest personal % lost, with 1.8% for the week!  We had MANY teams w/a 1% or BETTER loss & everyone did a GREAT job!  We had FUN doing our "212 Challenge" exercises all week (we challenged the group to do 212 of "SOMETHING" while they watched Biggest Loser last week).  Many of the teams took it a step further & did them all week (that meant some of us did over 1000 EXTRA "crunches" for the week ... I guess they DID "make a difference" huh??Wink).  The "winners" of our 212 Family this week are Ray & I, so we are going to come up with another FUN challenge for our group to MOTIVATE us this week! 212 DETERMINATION will make the difference!!!

    Week 5... and still counting

Good morning everyone!  And Happy Super Sunday!  (That's Super Bowl Sunday, the football game, not hot fudge Sunday).  It  has been a while since I wrote anything so I thought I would get my two cents in today.  Got on the scale this morning and lost 4 lbs!   Yeah!!!!  I was really hoping to get out of the 220's... maybe next week.  Taking the day off today, as I usually do. Hopefully, my foot will feel better.  It is a little sore in the arch today.  Have a fun day and root for whoever you want for the football game!

Congrats to my wife for being down a couple of pounds this week as well!  Keep up the great work honey!  Remember... slow and steady keeps the weight off for good!
    I love you Ang!

Until next time.... get off the couch and move your mass!

Weekly "FYI" - Swap the bad for the good!

For all you guys & gals out there who might still be longing for some "old unhealthy favorites" (think wings, pizza, taco bell, etc.) ... I just ran across an article in Women's Health that I thought might help.  With the "BIG GAME" coming up this weekend, I also thought it was PERFECT for helping us make some "HEALTHY SWAPS"!!  Remember, many of these "healthier options" are STILL heavy on the sodium or higher in calories than we would want in a snack/meal, but for those "just dying to have ...." cravings, these would be good substitutes!  Enjoy & let me know what you think!! (Ray, I'm off to find you some Morningstar Farms Buffalo Wings, so just HANG ON a little longer!!!) Open-mouthed ~ Angie

    HEALTHY JUNK FOOD

Eat This, Not That: Guy Food

Here's which burritos, hot dogs, nachos, and pizza to eat—and which to avoid

    Burger on the Grill

Eat this 1 fresh all-white-meat turkey burger patty
    Per Burger (Uncooked) 130 calories, 5 g fat, (0 g saturated fat), 55 mg sodium, 0 g carbohydrates, 0 g fiber, 28 g protein

Not that 1 frozen Bubba Burger
    Per Burger (Uncooked) 420 calories, 36 g fat, (21 g saturated fat), 85 mg sodium, 0 g carbohydrates, 0 g fiber, 23 g protein

Why: It's still a char-grilled burger—slap on some condiments and he probably won't even know he's not eating the real thing. Meanwhile, you'll save on calories while still getting a 5 gram protein bonus.

    Burrito

Eat this Amy's Black Bean Vegetable Burrito
    Per Burrito 280 calories, 8 g fat (1 g saturated fat), 580 mg sodium, 44 g carbohydrates, 4 g fiber, 9 g protein

Not that Taco Bell Bean Burrito
    Per Burrito 340 calories, 9 g fat, (3.5 g saturated fat), 1,190 mg sodium, 54 g carbohydrates, 8 g fiber, 13 g protein

Why: Drive-thrus don't offer an array of healthy choices, but stocking the freezer with Amy's guarantees you a fat-fighting option in the same amount of time. Plus, studies show that regular bean-eaters have a 22 percent lower risk of obesity.

    Chinese Take-Out

    Eat this Chicken & Broccoli
    Per 10 oz serving 310 calories, 12 g fat, (2.5 g saturated fat), 2,230 mg sodium, 13 g carbohydrates, 2 g fiber, 35 g protein

    Not that General Tso's Chicken
    Per 10 oz serving 560 calories, 32 g fat, (3 g saturated fat), 1,650 mg sodium, 43 g carbohydrates, 1 g fiber, 21 g protein

Why: Ordering grilled chicken with veggies in light sauce delivers all the flavor without the artery-clogging, spare-tire-inducing fat. Just be stingy with the soy sauce—this dish already packs enough sodium for an entire day.

    Hot Dog

Eat this Applegate Farms Organic Turkey Hot Dogs
    Per Dog 80 calories, 6 g fat, (2 g saturated fat), 350 mg sodium, 0 g carbohydrates, 0 g fiber, 6 g protein

Not that Ball Park Beef Frank
    Per Dog 180 calories, 16 g fat, (6 g saturated fat), 560 mg sodium, 3 g carbohydrates, 0 g fiber, 6 g protein

Why: Dogs seem to be a staple on nearly every guy's grocery list, but Applegate doggies aren't mystery meat. They're basically nitrite-free organic turkey shaped into a wiener, with the same amount of protein and 100 fewer calories.

    BBQ Ribs

Eat this 1 Gardenburger BBQ Riblet (5 oz)
    Per Riblet 240 calories, 4.5 g fat, (0 g saturated fat), 580 mg sodium, 33 g carbohydrates, 5 g fiber, 17 g protein

Not that Kansas City-style BBQ pork ribs (3 oz, with sauce)
    Per Serving 430 calories, 27 g fat (10 g saturated fat), 1,820 mg sodium, 20 g carbohydrates, 2 g fiber, 28 g protein

Why: A larger serving of these veggie delights provides 5 grams of fiber—that's 20 percent of your RDA. Because the veg version has about half the calories and 17 filling grams of protein, neither you nor your man will miss (or feel like) the pig. And you can still enjoy licking barbecue sauce off each other's fingers.

    Pizza

Eat this Medium Thin N Crispy Pizza Hut Pizza 12-inch pizza with Sauce, Cheese, Grilled Chicken, Green Pepper, Mushroom, Red Onion, Tomatoes
    Per Slice 180 calories, 6 g fat, (3 g saturated fat), 540 mg sodium, 22 g carbohydrates, 1 g fiber, 10 g protein

Not that Pizza Hut Medium Pan Supreme
    Per Slice 310 calories, 16 g fat (6 g saturated fat), 720 mg sodium, 28 g carbohydrates, 2 g fiber, 13 g protein

Why: It's still a piping-hot fresh pie, and hey, is there any such thing as bad pizza? This version's veggies up the flavor factor (especially those green peppers and onions), and with the addition of grilled chicken, he won't even miss the red meat (or the pools of grease that come with it).

    Chicken Wings

Eat this Morningstar Farms Buffalo Wings
    Per 5 Wings 200 calories, 9 g fat, (1 g saturated fat), 790 mg sodium.19 g carbohydrates, 3 g fiber, 11 g protein

Not that Chili's Grill Wings Over Buffalo with dressing
    Per 5 Wings 670 calories, 59 g fat (13 g saturated fat), 1,445 mg sodium, 2 g carbohydrates, 0 g fiber, 34 g protein

Why: These veggie nuggets taste amazing. They're crispy, spicy, chewy, and protein-rich—and they smell delish. Even a hardcore wing fan will feel fully satisfied, and you can still pair them with celery and light ranch dressing. Bonus: 3 grams of fiber, a filling fat-fighter real wings lack.

    Nacho Topping

Eat this Hormel Turkey Chili with Beans
    Per Cup 200 calories, 3 g fat (1 g saturated fat), 1,200 mg sodium, 26 g carbohydrates, 5 g fiber, 17 g protein

Not that Bush's Chunky Homestyle Chili with Beans
    Per Cup 260 calories, 10 g fat (3.5 g saturated fat), 1,250 mg sodium, 28 g carbohydrates, 8 g fiber, 15 g protein

Why: The turkey chili packs a healthy boost of veggies, so it's filling—and it's so delicious he won't start asking where the beef is. Spread it over some whole-wheat tortilla chips with low-fat cheese for a perfect game-time treat.
